I’m celebrating the release of Elise Kova’s new book with a read along for The Alchemists of loom. I loved this book. It’s gritty and steampunky and literally everything I want from a fantasy. You can check out my review.

Her vengeance. His vision.
Ari lost everything she once loved when the Five Guilds’ resistance fell to the Dragon King. Now, she uses her unparalleled gift for clockwork machinery in tandem with notoriously unscrupulous morals to contribute to a thriving underground organ market. There isn’t a place on Loom that is secure from the engineer turned thief, and her magical talents are sold to the highest bidder as long as the job defies their Dragon oppressors.
Cvareh would do anything to see his sister usurp the Dragon King and sit on the throne. His family’s house has endured the shame of being the lowest rung in the Dragons’ society for far too long. The Alchemist Guild, down on Loom, may just hold the key to putting his kin in power, if Cvareh can get to them before the Dragon King’s assassins.
When Ari stumbles upon a wounded Cvareh, she sees an opportunity to slaughter an enemy and make a profit off his corpse. But the Dragon sees an opportunity to navigate Loom with the best person to get him where he wants to go.
He offers her the one thing Ari can’t refuse: A wish of her greatest desire, if she brings him to the Alchemists of Loom.

I’m thrilled today to have a chance to interview Elise about this book. I hope you will enjoy hearing about her thought process when she wrote it as much as I did.

We get to meet Ari in these chapters and she has a very interesting pastime. Have you ever stolen something? (even accidentally)

Stolen something? Other than the hearts of men and women around the globe? (I AM TOTALLY KIDDING)

One thing that I can remember… I made a friend at a martial arts studio I was going to in college and she was also into anime. She lent me her DVD of the live action adaptation of NANA and I held onto it forever because I was busy with school and just never got around to watching it. She ended up moving away and I found it in my drawer a few weeks later. I wasn’t able to get it back to her in time… The worst part? I still haven’t watched it!

Ari never intended to become a thief. If you weren’t an author, what would you want to do?

Before I was an author I worked at a Fortune 500 tech company in marketing, which was actually the focus of my MBA degree. So, if I wasn’t an author I’d likely be back in corporate America and in marketing.

If I could have a dream job? I’d likely be an artist. I’ve always loved drawing, painting, and graphic design.

What character do you feel is more you, Ari or Cvareh?

It’s hard to say… I love tea and wine, which is something I share with Cvareh. However, while I really appreciate fashion, I’m absolutely terrible at it. My more serious and logical sides align with Arianna. I guess it depends on my mood?

Did you base the geography of Loom on anywhere in particular?

A few places…

When I was young my mother and I went on a road trip through the mid-west and stopped to tour the caves in the Black Hills and Badlands of South Dekota. This, combined with the catacombs in Rome, inspired a lot of the Underground in Ter.4.

San Francisco gave a lot of inspiration to both Loom… Everything from the old steamships in the Maritime National Historical Park, to the Embarcadero, to Alcatraz as a floating prison, the beautiful woodwork of the Temple in Hays Valley, even the overall elements of art deco architecture found throughout the city.

Sonoma County, CA, also was inspiration for the isle of Ruana on Nova… Really, a lot of where I’ve traveled and spent time has given inspiration to different parts that make up the whole of the world.

Cvareh returns home to his sky world of Nova with the genius crafter Arianna as his temperamental guest. The mercurial inventor possesses all the Xin family needs to turn the tides of a centuries-old power struggle, but the secrets she harbors must be earned with trust -- hard to come by for Ari, especially when it comes to Dragons. On Nova, Ari finds herself closer to exacting vengeance against the traitor who killed everything -- and everyone – she once loved. But before Ari can complete her campaign of revenge, the Crimson Court exposes her shadowed past and reveals something even more dangerous sparking between her and Cvareh.
While Nova is embroiled in blood sport and political games, the rebels on Loom prepare for an all-out assault on their Dragon oppressors. Florence unexpectedly finds herself at the forefront of change, as her unique blend of skills -- and quick-shooting accuracy -- makes her a force to be reckoned with. For the future of her world, she vows vengeance against the Dragons.
Before the rebellion can rise, though, the Guilds must fall.

About the Author

Elise Kova has always had a profound love of fantastical worlds. Somehow, she managed to focus on the real world long enough to graduate with a Master’s in Business Administration before crawling back under her favorite writing blanket to conceptualize her next magic system. She currently lives in St. Petersburg, Florida, and when she is not writing can be found playing video games, watching anime, or talking with readers on social media. She is the USA Today bestselling author of the Air Awakens Series as well as the Loom Saga.
