It started for pranks, fun, and forever memories.A secret society – for the four of us. The rules: Never lie. Never tell. Love each other. We made the pledge and danced under the blood moon on the meteorite in the orchard. In the spot we found the dead girl five years earlier. And discovered the ancient drawings way before that. Nothing could break the four of us apart – I thought. But then, others wanted in. Our seaside town had secrets. History. We wanted revenge. We broke the rules. We lied. We told. We loved each other too much, not enough, and in ways we weren’t supposed to. Our invention ratcheted out of control. What started as a secret society, ended as justice. Revenge. Death. Rebellion.

I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I’m the worst kind of mystery reader. Generally about halfway through with the story, I get bored and decide to flip to the end to find out who the killer is. I don’t know why but i’m usually not capable of reading an entire thriller without KNOWING what is going on. It’s always a little disappointing but I can’t help myself. I always peek.

Until now!

This book kept my attention until the very end. I never thought to look ahead because I was too involved with what was going on with the characters in the book. I love strong friendships and close relationships in books and that’s what First We Were IV is based on. Yes, there is a mystery that becomes more and more prevalent throughout the book but the focus is on the characters. Viv, Izzy, Graham and Harry are best friends and it focuses on how that friendship is changed by the circumstances. Especially when they start to get some attention from the popular kids at school.

I also thought that the book flowed perfectly. The characters motivations were understandble. It made sense to me. While the ending was a complete shock, it also made perfect sense when I thought back over the course of the story. For a mystery book cynic, like myself, this book was a breath of fresh air.

Earlier this year I had the chance to do a First We Were IV Fancast. Check it out if you are interested in who I picked for Viv, Graham, Harry and Izzy!

Cvareh returns home to his sky world of Nova with the genius crafter Arianna as his temperamental guest. The mercurial inventor possesses all the Xin family needs to turn the tides of a centuries-old power struggle, but the secrets she harbors must be earned with trust -- hard to come by for Ari, especially when it comes to Dragons. On Nova, Ari finds herself closer to exacting vengeance against the traitor who killed everything -- and everyone – she once loved. But before Ari can complete her campaign of revenge, the Crimson Court exposes her shadowed past and reveals something even more dangerous sparking between her and Cvareh.

While Nova is embroiled in blood sport and political games, the rebels on Loom prepare for an all-out assault on their Dragon oppressors. Florence unexpectedly finds herself at the forefront of change, as her unique blend of skills -- and quick-shooting accuracy -- makes her a force to be reckoned with. For the future of her world, she vows vengeance against the Dragons.

Before the rebellion can rise, though, the Guilds must fall.

I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I cannot express my love for this book or this series adequately. There just aren’t enough ways for me to say how fantastic it is.  Be aware that it’s almost impossible to review book 2 of a series without a few slight spoilers. Continue at your own risk!

I love Ari. She’s strong and smart and interesting… but not perfect. I love Cvareh. The relationship between Ari and Cvareh is so deliciously complicated. I loved how traveling to Nova added an extra level and depth to their relationship. Ari gets a chance to learn more about the lives of her worst enemies and Cvareh gets to show her his world. Enemies to lovers has always been my favorite trope and Elise Kova is a master. The tension between these two was palpable throughout the book. It was all I could do to not scream at the characters for being so hard headed.

I love Ari and Cvareh but my favorite character, hands down, is Florence. Florence isn’t exactly the badass that Ari is. Instead she’s approachable. She makes mistakes and is sometimes unsure of herself. Not to say that Florence isn’t amazing. I loved that she gets an adventure of her own in this book. She gets a chance to be the hero, which was so fun to read! Except it never quite works out the way you think it will.

My only tiny quibble with The Alchemists of Loom was that I wanted more. I wanted to know more about the world. I wanted more descriptions. I wanted more everything. Dragons of Nova delivered! Everything on Nova is bright and colorful, Its magical and luminous and so well described. I felt like I was there. This book is full of Guilds and Dragon houses and how everything works and all the little reveals I was waiting for.

I can’t recommend this series highly enough. You want this series. You need this series. Buy this series and then send me all your thanks.
