Her vengeance. His vision.
Ari lost everything she once loved when the Five GuildsÂ’ resistance fell to the Dragon King. Now, she uses her unparalleled gift for clockwork machinery in tandem with notoriously unscrupulous morals to contribute to a thriving underground organ market. There isnÂ’t a place on Loom that is secure from the engineer turned thief, and her magical talents are sold to the highest bidder as long as the job defies their Dragon oppressors.
Cvareh would do anything to see his sister usurp the Dragon King and sit on the throne. His familyÂ’s house has endured the shame of being the lowest rung in the DragonsÂ’ society for far too long. The Alchemist Guild, down on Loom, may just hold the key to putting his kin in power, if Cvareh can get to them before the Dragon KingÂ’s assassins.
When Ari stumbles upon a wounded Cvareh, she sees an opportunity to slaughter an enemy and make a profit off his corpse. But the Dragon sees an opportunity to navigate Loom with the best person to get him where he wants to go.
He offers her the one thing Ari canÂ’t refuse: A wish of her greatest desire, if she brings him to the Alchemists of Loom.

This book blew my mind!

I’m a huge fan of Steampunk and I’m always on the lookout for books in that genre. They are few and far between. Even when a book is billed as steampunk, its hard to find one with the right combination of gritty technology and magic. Alchemists of Loom hits the sweet spot. There are guns and bombs and gears and airships and plenty more elements that make for true steampunk. Elise Kova also weaves in tons of magic and mystery. This book nails the genre.

What made this book a new favorite though was the unique setting. Loom and Nova are like nowhere I’ve ever read about before. Elise weaves the information about the setting throughout the story without ever committing the sin of the infodump. It was surprising to me because its so subtle. Throughout the book, I kept thinking, I wish I knew more about the world. Tell me MORE. Then when the book was over, I was describing it to a friend and I realized that I knew so much more than I thought I did. All the little details that I love about fantasy were in the narrative. I learned everything I could have wanted to about the world without even realizing it.

The world is deliciously complex. I can’t explain it with the depth and beauty that Elise did, so I’m not going to bother trying. I just loved the 3 different races and the way that they both complimented and struggled against each other. It’s ridiculous because they have a symbiotic relationship. One wouldn’t even exist without the other two. Still they are locked in a battle of rebellion and oppression.

A complicated world with conflicting motives, interesting characters with deep and changing motivations and a rip roaring, nonstop chase across multiple territories. What’s not to love?? Pick this book up immediately.

  1. I love it when books have detailed, complex world-building and steampunk is always a fun setting, especially when there’s plenty of action. I haven’t read the Air awakens series yet but I’m pumped for this one! Great review 😀
