As a new blogger, it can be really hard to join in. I know this from experience as I’ve been blogging for only 5 months. When you jump into blogging, it can be very intimidating because you are entering in a small community of tight knit friends. Beginning blogging, I noticed the friendships and the community right away and all I could think was, “THAT! That’s what I want.” Still it was daunting to jump in. I often wondered (and sometimes still do), what I have to offer this community that isn’t already here.

So how did I get past that and start making friends? Two very important ways.

The first is an attitude adjustment on my part. I am the only one of me in existence and I try to remember that I enrich this community just by being myself. I admit, this is a bit of a struggle for me. However, everyday I remind myself that I’m enough. You are too.

Second, I say yes. When I see an opportunity to join and be a part of something in the blogging world, I jump at the chance. I’ve only been blogging for 5 months, however, I’m part of 2 street teams and tour host for several tours. I’m participating in #OTSPSecretSister and I’ve made tons of friends there. I’m a blogger pen pal. I was matched up with 10 other bloggers for The Book Bratz Summer Blogger Promo tour. I talk on twitter as much as I have time for. I started a Twitter Chat Calendar and I signed up for the Blogger Creativity Project.  If an opportunity presents itself, I want to try it. That’s also the exact reason I’m sharing this challenge with you today. I said yes.

Its challenging and a little scary for a new blogger to put yourself out there. but its so worth it. Every opportunity you take part in opens the door to another exciting experience.

Your Mini Challenge

During this week of Bloggiesta, you are going to have the opportunity to participate in many events. There will be Mini-challenges, twitter chats and all sorts of people to talk to and get to know. My challenge to you is to say YES. Pick something a little out of your comfort zone and try it. Then come back here and tell me about it. Good luck! I’m sure you will surprise yourself!

  1. I’ve been blogging a little longer than you (exactly one year), and I’m not even engaged in half as many things as you. You can be proud of that. Reaching out to the community isn’t easy, especially as a newbie it sometimes feels like you’re just shouting into the void. Way to go!

  2. Wow! I’m impressed with your progress for only having blogged for 5 months!! And excited to see all the blog tours you participate in. Every person on earth has a unique voice unlike anyone else’s. We are all filters – 10 people can see the same thing and each come away with a different perspective. Even more so with books, which are so complex. You bring unique experiences and voice to the table, and may see things in books that others do not. 😀 I’m happy to be following you and see what you come up with! 🙂

  3. Thanks for coming by and joining my mini challenge! I was excited that someone jumped on it right away 🙂

I’m excited for you … there’s so much to take part in, so much to learn, and so many awesome peeps to me. You’ve just hit the tip of the iceberg!

  4. I’ve been blogging for less than a month. I decided to start after I joined #otspsecretsister and started talking to a few girls. I’m not a big writer, but I wanted to give it a try. So starting a blog in itself is my challenge. So far i’ve done two book reviews and a few introductory posts. I look forward to posting more and making more friends in the #otspsecretsister community.

I’m so glad you took the plunge and started a blog! I know it can be a little scary and it feels like you are just shouting into the void. The community is really worth it though.

  5. Thanks for your advice! So far I have said yes to Bloggiesta and I have already participated in two Twitter chats. I have just been blogging for a few months and I totally agree with you – just saying YES can make all the difference. It’s scary at first, but I am starting to meet some people in the blogging community and it’s been great! I really want to join #OTSPSecretSister as well. Can’t wait to continue meeting people through Bloggiesta!

  6. I’ve only been blogging for a little over a month, but I did a few things outside my comfort zone during Bloggiesta– The primary being participating in chats. I’m one of those people who absolutely HATES talking to strangers. I won’t even order a pizza. Add that to the fact that I’m just learning how to navigate Twitter, and, in my mind at least, it could have been disastrous. However, I ended up really enjoying the Twitter chats! I was blown away at how open and accommodating everyone was and how eager to help out newbie bloggers they were! I also emailed a couple publishers regarding ARCs, which was tough for me both in the stranger aspect and in the “fear of rejection” aspect.

I’m so glad that you gave it a try! I really enjoy twitter chats and I feel like I’ve made a lot of friends there. I hope you will have as much success.

  7. My blog is 1 month old. So I am very new to the process. During this bloggiesta I set up my subscribe to mail list, created rich pins on Pinterest. Backed up my blog. I wanted to participate in the Twitter chats but something always came up to get my attention

I added an about us page and did Ashley’s (nose graze) suggestion of adding a way for ppl to sign up to follow at the end of the About page. 🙂

  9. Ive been blogging about 3 months and have done a lot of what you said. You cant be included unless you say YES! I actually started filling out those blog tour requests instead of just saying “they wont pick me” and what do you know…I got accepted for one!

  10. […] I had such a wonderful experience with my last Bloggiesta, even though it was my very first one. I knew I had to join again as soon as it was announced! Last event I connected with MC at Blame it on the Books. I’m so grateful that she reached out because we have become friends. I even had the opportunity to run a mini-challenge on Joining in as a New Blogger. […]
