Not so Waiting on Wednesday

Posted March 15, 2017 by Emily in Discussion, WoW / 0 Comments

I had posted that I was excited about The Black Witch by Laurie Forest. I have been busy. See my recent life update for why and I haven’t been as active on twitter as I have in the past. I had missed a lot of discussion about this book. I appreciate a friend for pointing out all the people who have read this book and found it contains negative racial stereotypes. This is not something I want to promote. Please check out the following threads and posts regarding this book.

In the #1 New York Times bestselling Mercy Thompson novels, the coyote shapeshifter has found her voice in the werewolf pack. But when Mercy's bond with the pack and her mate is broken, she'll learn what it truly means to be alone...
Attacked and abducted in her home territory, Mercy finds herself in the clutches of the most powerful vampire in the world, taken as a weapon to use against alpha werewolf Adam and the ruler of the Tri-Cities vampires. In coyote form, Mercy escapes only to find herself without money, without clothing, and alone in the heart of Europe...
Unable to contact Adam and the rest of the pack, Mercy has allies to find and enemies to fight, and she needs to figure out which is which. Ancient powers stir, and Mercy must be her agile best to avoid causing a war between vampires and werewolves, and between werewolves and werewolves. And in the heart of the ancient city of Prague, old ghosts rise...

We all have our auto-buy authors. Those authors that we buy no matter what they write and when. Patricia Briggs is definitely one of mine. I fell in love with Mercy Thompson years ago with the first book in the series, Moon Called. This series has high stakes and relate-able characters. It’s not easy to read or even easy to like sometimes but it keeps me coming back. I have to know what happens next to Mercy and Adam. This next one is no exception. It sounds like Mercy has gotten herself in real trouble, far away without her support system. I can’t wait to see what happens.

Patricia Briggs will be in Houston as part of her release tour and I will be there! I’m waiting to buy this one until I’m there so I can have her sign it. It’s makes the wait longer, but it’s worth it!

Waiting on Wednesday: When Dimple Met Rishi

Waiting on Wednesday: When Dimple Met Rishi

The thing that really draws me to this book is the cover. I love the girl’s face on the cover. That grin!!! It’s just so joyous. I’ve never seen a cover that exudes so much happiness. Past the cover, the book sounds perfect. Enemies to loves is always my favorite trope. I love the idea that these two kids have been promised to each other in an arranged marriage. However, they don’t know it and they don’t even like each other! Can’t wait to read this one!

Waiting on Wednesday: Wintersong

Waiting on Wednesday: Wintersong

I have loved the movie Labyrinth since I was a small child so you can imagine that I see David Bowie the second you mention Goblin King. The cover, with it’s glass ball snowglobe also reminds of the balls that the Goblin King juggles in that movie. The colors look cold and the glass globe makes the rose look protected, yet trapped. Reading the description, I think the cover is perfect. I’m not sure that Wintersong has anything to do with Labyrinth. In fact, I think it’s more likely that it doesn’t. I’ve also heard that it’s a retelling based on the poem ,Der Erlkonig. I wasn’t familiar with the poem, so I looked it up. It’s haunting and beautiful, just like I expect this book to be. Really though, this book has a Goblin King. What else to you really need to know.

Waiting on Wednesday: Caraval

Waiting on Wednesday: Caraval

I’ve been waiting for this book for so long and the wait is almost over. Have you preordered yet? The preorder incentives are great. There’s a map, crayons and a string backapack. The real problem is deciding which book to preorder. There is the US one and then the UK version has 4 different covers, each is more beautiful than the last! Seriously, everything about this books sounds fantastic. There is a dark and mysterious game that is only played once a year and never in the same place.  The game has a slightly sinister seeming leader who no one has ever met. The only reason that Scarlett chooses to play the game is to protect her sister, ‘Tella. Mystery, a dark game, a sinister leader and a strong sisterly bond. What else do you want?

WoW: History is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera

WoW: History is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera

. Sometimes I want to read fantasy and sometimes romance. Less often though, I want to read something that kicks me right in the feels. This sounds like one of those books. Just from reading the description, I already feel terrible for Jackson and Griffin. I can’t imagine the grief of losing a loved one. I want to read this book in order to see if Griffin and Jackson help each other heal.

WoW: Flame in the Mist by Renee Ahdieh

WoW: Flame in the Mist by Renee Ahdieh

What I Love Who isn’t looking forward to this Mulan retelling? The icing on the cake is Renee Ahdieh being the author. The Wrath and the Dawn is enough for me to want to read anything she creates for this world. To steal a line from John Green’s TFIOS, I would read her grocery lists. I’m also always about badass women, especially when they’re being underestimated by men and it sounds like this is exactly the type of MC Mariko is going to be. All of that coupled with murder, betrayal, and undercover operations makes this a definite pre-order. I can’t wait for May!

WoW: The Edge of Everything by Jeff Giles

WoW: The Edge of Everything by Jeff Giles

What I Love So this one is a little bit of a cheat. I admit, I’ve already read this but it doesn’t come out for months and I haven’t been hearing much about it. I will post my review in December but I wanted to start talking about it now. This book is really special. If you haven’t thought about it up until now, I’m urging you to take another look. It has bounty hunters and love and grief and truth. It’s one of the truest books I’ve read this year. I can’t wait to buy my finished copy. If this one isn’t on your radar, it needs to be!

WoW: My Sister Rosa by Justine Larbalestier

WoW: My Sister Rosa by Justine Larbalestier

What I love Everything about this book sounds fantastic! I’ve always been interested in the inner workings of serial killers or psychopaths. I think it stems from working with some very sick and disturbed kids over the years. I could tell you stories! The thought of a family member trying to control someone they believe is a psychopath is heart wrenching. Sociopaths are charming liars, skilled in manipulating everyone around them. Living with one has to be one of the most difficult lives imaginable. Just thinking about it chills me to the bone. This book sounds like a creepy psychological thriller that’s perfect to read right after Halloween! If the psychology of psychopaths interests you, check out The Psychopath Test by Jon Ronson! Are you a fan of thrillers?

Waiting on Wednesday: Gemina by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman

Waiting on Wednesday: Gemina by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman

What I love This week’s book comes out in just six short days! None of us have to wait very long. I think that Gemina is one of most people’s highly anticipated reads for this year. I know that I’ve been looking forward to it since I closed Illuminae for the first time. However I wanted to take this WoW post to urge you to try the Illuminae and Gemina Audio books! I know that you wouldn’t think the Epistolary format of this books would make good audio books. However, I just finished listening to the Illuminae audio book in my car and it’s one of the best audio books I’ve ever heard. It has a full cast and tons of special effects. Just like the combination of primary documents in the physical books drags you into the story, the audio book is captivating. It’s impossible to walk away from. This Waiting on Wednesday is a special edition because I can’t wait for the Gemina Audio! I’ve already preordered the YA Chronicles box, so I will be getting a Gemina Hardcover but you can bet I will be listening to the audio as well. Do you like audio books?
