Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.
Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.
Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha . . . and the secrets of her heart.
Shadow and Bone is the first installment in Leigh Bardugo's Grisha Trilogy.
I had the honor of Buddy Reading Shadow and Bone with Jade from Bedtime Bookworm . Then Grishaverse Expert, Brittany, from Brittany’s Book Rambles chose our stopping points,  listened in to our twitter conversations and laughed at us good-naturedly. This was also my very first Buddy Read and I think I chose the best book possible to start with.
I absolutely loved Shadow and Bone and I can’t say enough good things about it. Since I’m doing a Buddy Read, I thought it might be fun to see what we had to say about it while we were reading it, instead of a traditional review. I think it really shows what I was thinking and why I loved this book!
Buddy Read Reactions
Notice Britt’s evil chuckling. This happens a lot.
Then of course we had to talk about how much I love the Darkling.
And more Darkling love
I continually tried to talk Jade into loving the Darkling. Â It didn’t work.
Then this happened.
This was when we decided we had to read Siege and Storm. Reading this back to back is definitely the way to go.
