The world ruler is dead, technology foundational to their society destroyed, and Safara is on the brink of collapse. Half-human, half-alien Eros is the rightful heir to the world throne, but before he can return to the capital, he's abducted by a rebel group of humans who call themselves The Remnant--and won't release him until he swears to help them overthrow the very government he's inheriting. With Eros missing, ex-queen Kora is determined to stave off mad grabs for the throne. But as royalty from across the territories flock to the capital, and a new charismatic candidate takes the spotlight, Kora sets off into the desert with a skilled prince-turned-bounty hunter to find Eros before it's too late for both the future king and his kingdom.

I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

YES YES YES YES

When I reviewed Beyond the Red last year, I said that the only thing wrong with it was that it was a stand alone novel. I really felt like the story wasn’t finished and I was going to be sorely disappointed if I never got to read about Kora and Eros again. Don’t get me wrong, Beyond the Red does not have a cliffhanger. It is a complete story. It just left me wanting so much more. Into the Black definitely lived up to what I was hoping for. The characters are established, the world is the same one I enjoyed from Beyond the Red, everything was in place and this was the completely of the story I wanted. Where I loved the character development in Beyond the Red, What I really enjoyed in Into the Black was the politics. There is so much going on! Not to post too many spoilers but the ending of Beyond the Red flipped everything upside down and it was incredibly satisfying to find out what happened after.

****I’m going to assume that you’ve read Beyond the Red from this point on, so please don’t continue if you are afraid of spoilers.****

The roles in this book have flipped and I loved it. Eros is now the rightful heir, except no one wants to consider him based on the politics and prejudices of the world. Kora has gone from being Avra to being no one and she really doesn’t like it. It was fun for me as she had to struggle to adjust to her new circumstances and grow as a person. Eros on the other hand, had to come to terms with being the heir to the throne of a society that hates him. His journey was just as amazing as Kora’s because he has to learn forgiveness if he’s going to be able to change anything at all.

I really enjoyed this series. Into the Black was the ending that it needed. I definitely recommend that you read it for the characters. I fell in love with Kora and Eros all over again. If I had one little tiny quibble, it would be that the ending was too perfect. It wrapped up too neatly in the last 30 pages. The entire book was struggle struggle struggle and then oh, it’s done. I don’t know how you can change that but it was a tiny let down after 200 pages of awesome.

Alien queen Kora has a problem as vast as the endless crimson deserts. SheÂ’s the first female ruler of her territory in generations, but her people are rioting and call for her violent younger twin brother to take the throne. Despite assassination attempts, a mounting uprising of nomadic human rebels, and pressure to find a mate to help her rule, sheÂ’s determined to protect her people from her brotherÂ’s would-be tyrannical rule.
Eros is a rebel soldier hated by aliens and human alike for being a half-blood. Yet that doesn’t stop him from defending his people, at least until Kora’s soldiers raze his camp and take him captive. He’s given an ultimatum: be an enslaved bodyguard to Kora, or be executed for his true identity—a secret kept even from him.
When Kora and Eros are framed for the attempted assassination of her betrothed, they flee. Their only chance of survival is to turn themselves in to the high court, where revealing ErosÂ’s secret could mean a swift public execution. But when they uncover a violent plot to end the human insurgency, they must find a way to work together to prevent genocide.

YES! YA Science Fiction!

Kora is an alien queen on a far away planet. The aliens are the dominant species on this planet and the ruling class. Kora is the first female Avra, or queen, that there has been in generations. That is creating some friction between her and her brother. Humans exist on the planet to be slaves. Any free humans are considered rebels. Any human/alien hybrids are considered anathema and killed at birth. Eros is a soldier for a rebel tribe. He also is half alien/half human. He meets Kora when she destroys his camp and takes his people as slaves. From there, things only go downhill.

I love science fiction. The second I saw this one,  I knew I would have to read it. It really checked all the boxes for a book that I will love. I keep typing up different checkboxes that this hit for me and then rethinking them because they are kind of spoilery. Suffice it to say, this book is much more than it seems.

The character development really made this book. At first, I had no idea how Eros and Kora would ever get past their first meeting. It was absolutely unforgivable to me. I didn’t know if I could ever forgive her and learn to like her as a character, let alone Eros. Still he has to find some way to deal will her because he becomes her personal bodyguard. Their interactions and the interactions with side characters were perfection. There is some romance in this book but it wasn’t what I expected at all. It was a very slow build too, which was perfect. I can’t stand insta-love.

There is only one thing wrong with this book. It currently is a stand alone, however I could see it as a series. It does not end in a cliff hanger, but there is so much more that I want to know. So, you should all go pre-order this book immediately so that the publisher sees how successful and wonderful this book is. Then they will order more in the series and we will all be happy. Especially me.
