James Hook is a child who only wants to grow up.
When he meets Peter Pan, a boy who loves to pretend and is intent on never becoming a man, James decides he could try being a child—at least briefly. James joins Peter Pan on a holiday to Neverland, a place of adventure created by children’s dreams, but Neverland is not for the faint of heart. Soon James finds himself longing for home, determined that he is destined to be a man. But Peter refuses to take him back, leaving James trapped in a world just beyond the one he loves. A world where children are to never grow up.
But grow up he does.
And thus begins the epic adventure of a Lost Boy and a Pirate.
This story isnÂ’t about Peter Pan; itÂ’s about the boy whose life he stole. ItÂ’s about a man in a world that hates men. ItÂ’s about the feared Captain James Hook and his passionate quest to kill the Pan, an impossible feat in a magical land where everyone loves Peter Pan.
Except one.

The most important thing you can ask yourself before reading this book is, “Do I like Peter Pan?” Brianna Shrum does a terrific job of following the plot in this retelling. The amount of research that she has done is truly impressive. The tone, the phrasings, everything is a picture perfect representation of Barrie’s Peter Pan. James Hook grows into the classic representation of himself throughout the course of the book while Pan stays true to himself. Discovering Pan through James’ eyes as is a treat.

I was really excited to read this book. The moment I watched The Book Traveler’s book trailer I felt sure that this book was going to be an instant favorite for me. I love fairy tale retellings and underdog stories. I thought this one would be a slam dunk. Unfortunately, it fell a little flat.

I think my problem was I’m very familiar with story of Peter Pan and its never been a favorite of mine. I thought that seeing the story through Hook’s eyes would be completely different. Unfortunately, I knew what was going to happen before it did. I like stories that are surprising. During this one, I kept waiting for something new to happen that never did. View Spoiler » By the time the end came, it was almost a relief.

I think that a lot of people will really like this book. Its a expertly crafted alternate view of a classic fairy tale.  Just make sure that you really like the fairy tale that’s being retold.

If you are even the least bit excited about Never Never (and I know I am!), then you have to read this interview of Brianna Shrum. She sounds so down to earth and fun; exactly like someone I would want to be friends with. I want to know what her favorite RP system is now! Nerds are the best!

1. Tell us a little about yourself and your background?

So my name is Brianna, and I live in Colorado with my two little boys and my husband (who was also my high school sweetheart :D). IÂ’ve been writing poetry since I was a kid with my grandpa, but started writing novels when I saw The Hunger Games in theaters for the first time, and left inspired! (THANKS, SUZANNE COLLINS!)

2. What were you like in school? What was your favorite subject?

In elementary school I was a nerd with massive glasses. Literally nothing has changed. HA. In high school, I was a little cooler than elemtary Bri (NOT hard to do), but did debate and orchestra, so nerd forevahhhhh! My favorite subjects were English (shocker) and Debate.

3. What are your hobbies/What do you do for fun in your spare time?

Good question! I looooove geekery. So tabletop roleplaying, video gaming (especially RPGs. Awww yeahhhhh Bioware), board gaming, comic-cons (complete with cosplay), and all the jazz. I also play the violin, and have an electric Viper violin that I like to play rock on.

4. As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?

I REALLY desperately wanted to be a dentist. But that was because of the little elf guy in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. That was the extent of my research into the field, and I switched mannnnny times after. 😉

5. What book are you reading right now?

Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo. GOSH it is incredible. (Team Darkling For Lyfe)

6. Tell us about your current book.

IÂ’m co-writing a dark fantasy with my brother right now from the POV of a very dashing villain, set in a somewhat Middle Eastern inspired setting, verrrrrrry loosely inspired by Dorian Gray. ^_^

7. Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character?

In Never Never? IÂ’ve vacillated a lot. At first it was Ian Somerhalder. (SWOON). Then Tom Hiddleston. Right now, I like to imagine him as Cillian Murphy because HELLO SIR with your cornflower blue eyes:

cillian

8. How much research do you do?

For this one, I did a LOT. Reading and re-reading BarrieÂ’s original Peter Pan, doing research into the time period for setting, idioms, etc. Mostly, lots and lots of Pan.

9. Do you have a set writing schedule?

Naptime! My kids are 4 and almost 2, so I write when the 2 year old sleeps. And sometimes I stay up super late until IÂ’m falling asleep at the keyboard and the words get jumbled. IÂ’m not a super scheduled kind of person. 😉

10. Where can we find you on social media? (website, twitter, IG, whatever)
