His throne. Her rebellion. Their war.

Qole is the youngest starship captain in living memory on her homeworld of Alaxak and has spent her life hunting a dangerous energy source called Shadow. Alaxans distrust and evade the galaxy’s royalty as a rule, but Qole is now harboring the exiled Prince Nevarian Dracorte, along with some very conflicting feelings about it—and him.

Nev’s feelings are just as complicated, but not towards her. When it comes to Qole, he knows one thing: he’d do anything to stay with her. But when Alaxak is attacked and Nev finds himself framed for murder, he realizes the only way to help Qole and her people is to fight for the throne that should be his. To become the royal she might hate.

As for Qole, she would never have imagined herself as the leader of a rebellion. Despite that, she soon realizes that hiding from her power is no longer an option. It’s time to answer the call, even if it kills her.

I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Nev has just joined the crew of the starship Kaitan Heritage as the cargo loader. His captain, Qole, is the youngest-ever person to command her own ship, but she brooks no argument from her crew of orphans, fugitives, and con men. Nev can't resist her, even if her ship is an antique.

As for Nev, he's a prince, in hiding on the ship. He believes Qole holds the key to changing galactic civilization, and when her cooperation proves difficult to obtain, Nev resolves to get her to his home planet by any means necessary.

But before they know it, a rival royal family is after Qole too, and they're more interested in stealing her abilities than in keeping her alive.

Nev's mission to manipulate Qole becomes one to save her, and to survive, she'll have to trust her would-be kidnapper. He may be royalty, but Qole is discovering a deep reservoir of power--and stars have mercy on whoever tries to hurt her ship or her crew.

Review

Pacing in sequels can be very difficult! It’s hard to know what the right amount of action is when an author is stretching the story into three or more books. Book two can definitely drag sometimes. Shadow Call doesn’t fall prey to this curse though. It’s action packed and fast moving. It held up to the standard that Shadow Run set in book one.

I loved all the characters. Coming back to them was like running into old friends. Nev and Qole are of course my favorites but all the of the supporting characters really keep the book running. Arjan and Eton are back with Telu and Basra. Unfortunately, there are ramifications and lots of hard feelings left over from the results of Shadow Run. A great cast of characters makes the book for me and this book did not disappoint.

In Hollywood’s underworld of demigods, druids, and ancient bonds, one girl has a dangerous future.

Sage is eighteen, down on her luck, and struggling to survive on the streets of Los Angeles. Everything changes the night she’s invited to a party—one that turns out to be a trap.

Thrust into a magical world hidden within the City of Angels, Sage discovers that she’s the daughter of a Celtic goddess, with powers that are only in their infancy. Now that she is of age, she’s asked to pledge her service to one of the five deities, all keen on winning her favor by any means possible. She has to admit that she’s tempted—especially when this new life comes with spells, Hollywood glam, and a bodyguard with secrets of his own. Not to mention a prince whose proposal could boost her rank in the Otherworld.

As loyalties shift, and as the two men vie for her attention, Sage tries to figure out whom to trust in a realm she doesn’t understand. One thing is for sure: the trap she’s in has bigger claws than she thought. And it’s going to take a lot more than magic for this Celtic demigoddess to make it out alive.

I received this book for free from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

This book was an interesting take on the fae. Sage learns she is fae and then everything happens very fast. They have a presentation ceremony to show her off to the community the first night adn then she has only three days to decide which God’s faction that she wants to join. I really loved the flashbacks. Sage has a connection to a family member in the past. It reminded me a little of Wintersong. There are definite evil goblin king vibes. A beautiful girl, trapped into marriage with a monster. Then, against all odds, they fall in love. This love story, told in flashbacks, was my favorite part of the whole book.

I also really enjoyed the different kids of fae. There were different houses, who followed different Gods. Each house had it’s own sets of magical strengths and affinities. I wanted to learn more about what Gods each house followed and why and what their power types were.

I wasn’t crazy about the magical hierarchy. Some magical creatures, like nixies, were thought of as lesser than the children of Gods and Goddesses. When one of these lesser fae were injured or died, it was thought of as no great loss.

All in all, this book surprised me. I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did. I’m going to keep an eye out for the sequel. I want to find out more about the historical connection Sage has and how that is affecting her now.

SST Guest Post: C.V.Wyk’s Book Recommendations

SST Guest Post: C.V.Wyk’s Book Recommendations

I’m so glad that I can host C.V. Wyk’s book recommendations. There’s no greater compliment than when someone comes back and says that they loved the book I recommended! I love a lot of these, some I haven’t read and a few, well, we will have to agree to disagree. What do you think about C.V Wyk’s favorite books? With most things, I think variety is the key when it comes to reading. Everyone has a favorite genre, but reading outside of your comfort zone or preferences is always a good idea, too. Books are the cheapest form of travel, so why not go somewhere you’ve never been? To that end, I’ve broken down my list of books that I think everyone should read by category and genre.  Fantasy: This is my personal favorite, so I thought I’d start here. If you prefer the fantasy side of things, I think the Avalon series by Marion Zimmer Bradley and the Sevenwaters series by Juliet Marillier offer rare female-centric narratives as well as magic and folklore. Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials is the adventure story you need after finishing The Hobbit, and it’s one of those rare series that crosses sci-fi, fantasy, and MG fiction. More recent favorites of mine are V.E. Schwab’s Shades of Magic series and Neil Gaiman’s Stardust. Sci-fi: One incredible element of great sci-fi is allegory. Even stories that are set 10,000 years into the future can […]
