Our Dark Stars by Audrey Grey, Krystal Wade on March 6th 2018 Genres: Fantasy, Sci Fi Pages: 316 Format: ebook Source: Netgalley Buy on Amazon Goodreads While she sleeps, the whole universe changes. Princess Talia Starchaser has it all. Wealth. Status. Adoring citizens. But on the eve of her eighteenth birthday, she’s forced to publicly betray her best friend, a companion mock she’s had since birth, setting events into motion that lead to the destruction of the humans, and the princess floating through space, a remnant of a time when humans ruled over droids. One hundred years later, half-mock captain Will Perrault and his ragtag crew discover a device floating in space. When a very human Talia emerges from its depths, Will suspects she’s the key to buying his way back into the regiment he once commanded against the last remaining rebel humans—and the ruling mock queen’s good graces. Both Talia and Will would rather get space-tossed than trust one another, but with the queen’s forces chasing them across the galaxy and the fate of both worlds hanging in the balance, they’ll forge the unlikeliest of alliances to survive. FFBC Review: Active Memory by Dan Wells

FFBC Review: Active Memory by Dan Wells

Active Memory by Dan Wells Series: Mirador #3 Published by Balzer + Bray on February 13th 2018 Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult Pages: 400 Format: Paperback Source: the publisher Buy on Amazon Goodreads From Dan Wells, author of the New York Times bestselling Partials Sequence and the John Cleaver series, comes the third and final book in the dark, pulse-pounding, sci-fi neo-noir series that began with the acclaimed novel Bluescreen. For all the mysteries teen hacker Marisa Carneseca has solved, there has been one that has always eluded her: the truth behind the car accident in which she lost her arm and a mob boss’ wife, Zenaida de Maldonado, lost her life. Even in a world where technology exists to connect everyone’s mind to one another, it would seem that some secrets can still remain hidden. Those secrets rise violently to the surface, however, when Zenaida de Maldonado’s freshly severed hand shows up at the scene of a gangland shooting. If Zenaida is—or was—still alive, it means there’s even more about Marisa’s past that she doesn’t know. And when she and her friends start digging, they uncover a conspiracy that runs from the slums of Los Angeles to the very top of the world’s most powerful genetic engineering firm. If Mari wants the truth, she’s going to have to go through genetically enhanced agents, irritatingly attractive mob scions, and some […]

SST Guest Post: C.V.Wyk’s Book Recommendations

SST Guest Post: C.V.Wyk’s Book Recommendations

I’m so glad that I can host C.V. Wyk’s book recommendations. There’s no greater compliment than when someone comes back and says that they loved the book I recommended! I love a lot of these, some I haven’t read and a few, well, we will have to agree to disagree. What do you think about C.V Wyk’s favorite books? With most things, I think variety is the key when it comes to reading. Everyone has a favorite genre, but reading outside of your comfort zone or preferences is always a good idea, too. Books are the cheapest form of travel, so why not go somewhere you’ve never been? To that end, I’ve broken down my list of books that I think everyone should read by category and genre.  Fantasy: This is my personal favorite, so I thought I’d start here. If you prefer the fantasy side of things, I think the Avalon series by Marion Zimmer Bradley and the Sevenwaters series by Juliet Marillier offer rare female-centric narratives as well as magic and folklore. Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials is the adventure story you need after finishing The Hobbit, and it’s one of those rare series that crosses sci-fi, fantasy, and MG fiction. More recent favorites of mine are V.E. Schwab’s Shades of Magic series and Neil Gaiman’s Stardust. Sci-fi: One incredible element of great sci-fi is allegory. Even stories that are set 10,000 years into the future can […]

The Alchemists of Loom Read Along

The Alchemists of Loom Read Along

Chapters scheduled for read along: 1-3 I’m celebrating the release of Elise Kova’s new book with a read along for The Alchemists of loom. I loved this book. It’s gritty and steampunky and literally everything I want from a fantasy. You can check out my review. I’m thrilled today to have a chance to interview Elise about this book. I hope you will enjoy hearing about her thought process when she wrote it as much as I did. We get to meet Ari in these chapters and she has a very interesting pastime. Have you ever stolen something? (even accidentally) Stolen something? Other than the hearts of men and women around the globe? (I AM TOTALLY KIDDING) One thing that I can remember… I made a friend at a martial arts studio I was going to in college and she was also into anime. She lent me her DVD of the live action adaptation of NANA and I held onto it forever because I was busy with school and just never got around to watching it. She ended up moving away and I found it in my drawer a few weeks later. I wasn’t able to get it back to her in time… The worst part? I still haven’t watched it! Ari never intended to become a thief. If you weren’t an author, what would you want to do? […]
