Lightning flashes. Another child disappears…
When Zorka Circus performs, its big top roars with laughter and cheers, but when it moves on, there are fewer children in the European towns it leaves behind.
Circus Security Chief Rurik suspects a killer hides among the international performers, but they close ranks—they’ve always viewed lightning-scarred Rurik as the monster. Nevertheless, he's determined to find the culprit and stop them before anyone else dies and the only place he can call home is ripped apart by the murders.
Into Zorka Circus comes the Skomori clan, despised as gravediggers and ghoulish bloodwalkers. A one-day truce allows bloodwalker Sylvie to marry. Instead, she finds a body. Alerting others will defy her clan’s strict rules, break the truce, and leave her an outcast.
When more bodies turn up, the killer's trail becomes impossible to ignore. Rurik and Sylvie must follow the clues—even if they lead to something unimaginable.

I received this book for free from the author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

This is a first! Bloodwalker is the first book submitted to Awesome Indies that I have also chosen to review. This doesn’t mean that the other books were lacking in any way. It just means that Bloodwalker caught my attention. It started with a fantastic personal email. The author, L.X. Cain checked out my past reviews and decided her book and I would probably be a good match. She then sold her book to me by mentioning the plot and comparing it to books I loved. I didn’t know it at the time, but I took a chance. Her comparisons were spot on!

I really enjoyed this book. It’s creepy and different, which I loved. I can’t think of another book or series to compare it to. It’s part murder mystery and part paranormal or urban fantasy. I think that the best comparison is to a Pendergast novel by Preston and Child but even that isn’t a great description. There were layers of plot and subplot with all the characters subtlety interwoven. I really didn’t know what was going to happen up until the very end.

Both main characters are terrific. Rurik is really complex. I really think we just scratched the surface of his character. Damaged characters are my favorite kind! I love the character development that comes with damaged characters. Sylvie is a Skomori maiden, sold into marriage by her mother and culture. Skomori are the keepers of the dead in their culture. She has trained in their rituals her entire life and struggled. Her journey was completely different and just as engaging.

Currently Bloodwalker is a standalone, but I could also see it as the first book in a series. Which, honestly I hope that it is. Not only do I feel like the story isn’t over, I’d love to learn more about Rurik and the other characters in the Zorka Circus! With Halloween coming up, this is the perfect book for you.
