Something is terribly wrong in Detroit.
When Chris and Sarah bought an abandoned library to renovate and live in, they expected to be on the ground floor of the revival of Detroit. But unbeknownst to them, the city is about to fall. The devastation begins with a single woman who mysteriously tears off her clothing and starts walking the perimeter of an empty lot. Within minutes, hundreds of disparate people inexplicably join her to form a giant human circle slowly revolving like a hurricane of flesh. Moved by inexorable forces, they twitch and spasm, contorting their naked bodies in a primordial death dance. TheyÂ’re oblivious to everything, even the unfortunate souls who fall beneath their feet.
Bewildered citizens and authorities are desperate to know whatÂ’s causing the bizarre eventÂ… at least until it starts to rain.
Chris and Sarah abruptly find themselves trapped in a forsaken city. To survive, they must evade the horrifying illness, find food and shelter in a suddenly primitive worldÂ… and have a battle plan for when the circle stops spinningÂ…
The Dead Circle has 342 pages in print.
In The Dead Circle, Chris and Sarah are renovating an old library in downtown Detroit. They are safe, warm and dry when everything seems to go to hell. A woman takes a drink of water. Then suddenly she strips all of her clothes off and starts walking in a circle around a park. She’s gone. The water is totally contaminated. Any amount of water, even a drop, causes the same reaction. Do you know how difficult it is to avoid water?!?
I love horror novels and I have read many. Zombie novels are a particular favorite of mine. They are the kind of horror that sticks with me and has me ruminating on the story for weeks afterward. The Walking Dead comics, World War Z, and especially Cell by Stephen King all really got me thinking. The Dead Circle definitely falls into this category. I found myself thinking about every step I took while reading it. It didn’t help that it was raining outside.
This book is a combination between zombie horror and apocalyptic survival. There are naked people walking around and around outside. The water is poisonous. Chris and Sarah can’t leave their house without taking multiple, horrible risks. Every decision has to be weighed and measured. Even the smallest mistake means instant death.
This book is a cross genre thriller. The survival aspect will appeal to fans of Weir’s The Martian. All the while the scary themes will appeal to horror and zombie aficionados! Really this book was an instant hit for me. The only slight problem is that the second in this series isn’t written yet and I have to wait!
Ah! The book blogger’s lament 🙂
